How to check and recover driving-licence points
Official ways to check your points balance and the methods available for recovering points.
Check your points balance on the Motorist’s Portal or by calling the automated service on 06 45775962. A course restores 6 points for ordinary categories and 9 for specified professional licences, provided your balance has not reached zero.
Check your balance through an official channel
To see your current balance, use the Motorist’s Portal’s online “Points balance” service or another channel listed by the MIT. You will need the service’s required credentials; the Portal can explain other ways to consult the data. Do not rely on a personal tally based only on notices received: updates and recording can take time, so check the official balance.
Keep offence notices and check whether points were deducted. If you spot an error, read the notice and contact the named office for clarification. Appeal deadlines are stated in the notice and must not be ignored while you wait for the balance to be corrected.
A course does not restore points if your balance has reached zero: the MIT provides for a licence review in that case. A course restores up to 6 points for ordinary categories; for professional categories specified by the Ministry, it may restore up to 9. The safe-driving bonus is separate.
- Log in to the official service using the required credentials.
- Compare the balance with the notices you have received.
- If the information does not match, contact the relevant office without missing the stated deadlines.
How points can be recovered
The Highway Code provides for recovery through safe driving over time and courses run by authorised providers for certain licence categories. The number of recoverable points, conditions and course length depend on the case and may change. Before enrolling, check with the MIT which providers are authorised and which licence category the course covers. A certificate from an unauthorised provider may not have the expected effect.
Anyone who loses all points may be required to undergo a licence review; the authority and notice set out the consequences and next steps. Attending a course is not enough: read the notice and ask the Motor Vehicle Office how to proceed. Check any special rules for new drivers and professional categories.
Prevent further deductions
A licence holder may have several licences or professional qualifications associated with their record: check the balance and consequences for the relevant entitlement. If you receive a deduction notice, compare the date, number plate, driver and offence. The Portal may show an updated balance without explaining every administrative step, so keep the notices you receive. Choose an authorised course for your category; it is not the same as an ordinary driving-school course.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you revise the rules with study chapters, timed quizzes and review of mistakes.
Frequently asked questions
How many points can I recover with a course?
Up to 6 for ordinary licences and up to 9 for professional categories specified by the MIT. A course is available only if your balance has not been exhausted; zero points trigger a licence review.
Does a course always recover the same number of points?
Not necessarily. It depends on the category, conditions and current rules. Check with the MIT before enrolling.
