Fitness to drive and accessibility
Special driving licence: can I drive a different car model?
Not automatically. Compare the new car’s controls and approved adaptations with the restrictions on your special licence.
Not automatically. A special driving licence authorises driving subject to conditions and adaptations recorded for the individual holder. Before changing models, confirm that the controls and approved equipment match the licence codes and that required vehicle documents are up to date.
The licence records individual conditions
A special licence can specify restrictions or adaptations based on the driver’s assessment. Codes and entries qualify the categories printed on the document. Owning a different model does not remove those conditions, and a car marketed as accessible is not necessarily compatible with the individual codes.
Check the licence, including any code attached to category B, and compare it with the new vehicle’s steering, pedals, transmission, entry aids and installed controls. If the equipment has changed, confirm that the modification is approved and recorded. A device that helps one driver may not meet another person’s restrictions.
Confirm before switching vehicles
Before driving the new model, ask the competent Motor Vehicle Office, assessment commission or authorised specialist to confirm compatibility using the actual licence and vehicle documents. If a new assessment or licence update is required, complete it first. The current restrictions remain in force until they are formally changed.
For instance, if the licence requires a particular hand-operated accelerator and brake, a new car with a different control layout is not automatically acceptable. The fact that both cars are automatic or marketed as adapted does not answer whether the specified equipment matches. The exact code and approved installation matter.
Driving entitlement and vehicle approval are separate
Two checks are needed: the driver must be authorised for the controls, and the car must be roadworthy and correctly documented. Compatible equipment does not replace registration, insurance or approval requirements. An approved car also does not override a limitation printed on the driver’s licence.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers theory quizzes and mistake review; compatibility of an adapted car with an individual special licence needs an official check.
