Pickup classified M1 or N1: how do new-driver limits change?
Check the vehicle class on its registration document: the additional 105 kW cap applies to M1 vehicles under the post-2024 rules.
For a driver whose category B licence was issued after 14 December 2024, the new-driver power limits apply for three years. The general limit is 75 kW per tonne of tare, with an additional maximum of 105 kW for M1 vehicles. A pickup’s appearance does not determine whether it is M1 or N1; check its registered class and technical data.
The registered class matters
The rules introduced by the 2024 reform concern category B licences issued after the new provisions took effect on 14 December 2024. For three years, the vehicle must meet the 75 kW per tonne of tare limit. If classified as M1, it must also stay at or below 105 kW. These are cumulative tests for M1: meeting one does not cancel the other.
M1 identifies a passenger vehicle class; N1 identifies a goods vehicle within its class limits. A pickup’s appearance, advert or owner’s use is not enough to determine its legal class. Read the registration document. Older B licences follow the rules applicable to their issue date, so do not apply the new limits to every person informally called a new driver.
Check the pickup’s data
Find the vehicle class, power and tare data in its official documents. Divide kilowatts by tare in tonnes and compare the result with 75 kW/t. For an M1 pickup, also check the separate 105 kW ceiling. The MIT plate-check service is useful, but keep the registration document available to confirm its underlying data.
For example, an M1 pickup with 100 kW and a tare of 1.5 tonnes has a ratio of about 66.7 kW/t and falls within both numerical limits. An M1 version with 110 kW exceeds the 105 kW cap even if its ratio is below 75 kW/t. Confirm the exact registered class before using the example to decide whether you may drive.
Ownership does not create an exemption
The restriction concerns the driver and vehicle, not who owns the pickup. Borrowing a parent’s vehicle does not change the technical limits. If the issue date, vehicle class or power data are unclear, verify them first. The MIT checker may be inaccurate for some plug-in hybrids, so official vehicle data remain important.
