Licence categories
Trailer and semi-trailer: does the licence change for a car?
For a car, the licence depends on the category and authorised masses, not the label alone.
The technical distinction between a trailer and semi-trailer does not by itself create a different licence category for a car. Italian Article 116 sets the relevant combinations and mass thresholds; BE includes a trailer or semi-trailer within its stated limit. The specific vehicle combination must also be approved and technically compatible.
Check the category and masses
A trailer is drawn by a towing vehicle; a semi-trailer transfers a substantial part of its mass to the towing vehicle. That difference matters for approval and load distribution, but it is not enough to select a driving licence. Under Italian rules, category B covers a trailer up to 750 kg and certain heavier combinations within the statutory thresholds. Code 96 applies to specified combinations over 3,500 kg and up to 4,250 kg; BE covers a B vehicle with a trailer or semi-trailer whose maximum authorised mass does not exceed 3,500 kg when the authorised total exceeds 4,250 kg.
Use the maximum authorised masses in the vehicle documents, not the load carried on a particular day. Example: a car rated at 2,100 kg is paired with a semi-trailer rated at 1,800 kg. Their authorised total is 3,900 kg, so the code 96 branch is relevant; the word ‘semi-trailer’ does not automatically require BE. You must also establish that this type of semi-trailer is approved for that car and hitch, and that the car’s towing limit is sufficient.
A licence that covers the masses does not make an unapproved combination lawful. The manufacturer’s documentation, vehicle registration and technical approval determine whether the towing setup is permitted.
Check the specific setup
Read the registration documents for the car and trailer, including vehicle categories, maximum authorised masses, axle limits, vertical load and hitch approval. If the document does not clearly support the arrangement, ask the manufacturer or motor vehicle authority before coupling it. Do not assume a semi-trailer can be attached to an ordinary car just because BE includes semi-trailers in its definition.

Frequently asked questions
Does every semi-trailer require BE?
No. The category depends on the authorised masses and the combinations under Article 116; technical approval must also allow the setup.
If the total is below 4,250 kg, can I tow any semi-trailer?
No. You still need an approved combination and must follow towing, hitch, axle and load limits.
