Trailer plates: when do I need its own plate and a repeat plate?

A repeat plate displays the towing car’s plate; it does not replace the registered trailer’s own identification.

A registered trailer has its own identification, while the rear repeat plate reproduces the towing car’s registration when required. They serve different purposes. Check both plates and the trailer documents before driving, and make sure the visible repeat plate is correct, secure and readable.

Two plates with different roles

The trailer’s own plate identifies the registered trailer and must match its documents. The repeat plate reproduces the towing vehicle’s registration so that the combination can still be identified from behind when the trailer obscures the car’s plate. They are not interchangeable: displaying only the car’s plate does not replace the trailer’s registration, and the repeat plate does not make the trailer an unregistered accessory.

Check the trailer registration document, its own identification plate and the repeat plate used for the car that is actually towing it. The plates must be the right ones for the vehicles, securely fitted and legible. Rules can vary with vehicle class and registration status, so do not automatically apply the rule for a carrello appendice to an independently registered trailer. If the trailer plate is missing, damaged or inconsistent with its paperwork, resolve the issue before setting off.

Example: you tow a registered trailer with a repeat plate left over from a different car. The trailer may still carry its own correct registration, but the displayed towing-car number is wrong. Replace the repeat plate with one corresponding to the car in use, and check that the trailer’s identity matches its own documents.

Check the setup before travelling

Before coupling, compare the trailer’s plate and identification with its document. After connection, confirm that the repeat plate matches the towing car and is not covered by cargo, a bicycle rack or another accessory. Check lights, the electrical connection and secure fastening too; plate identification is only one part of roadworthiness.

If you have just bought the trailer or a plate is missing, do not improvise with a printout or another vehicle’s registration. Ask the motor vehicle authority how to regularise it. Frequently asked questions

Does a repeat plate replace the trailer’s own plate?

No. The repeat plate shows the towing car’s registration; a registered trailer keeps its own identification and documents.

Do I need a different repeat plate when I change cars?

Yes. It must match the car towing the trailer on that trip. Check the trailer’s own registration requirements as well.
