Road rules
Can I take my 125 scooter on a ring road?
It depends on the road section: a 125 may use roads covered by Article 175 only if the adult-rider condition is met.
The word “ring road” is not enough to answer. If the section is a motorway or main extra-urban road, a combustion 125 may use it only if the rider is an adult and licensed for that motorcycle; specific bans still apply.
Identify the road before applying the rule
“Ring road” is an everyday name, not a single legal road class. A route may include sections with different classifications, so the name alone cannot show whether a 125 is allowed. The Code distinguishes motorways, main extra-urban roads and secondary roads. Article 175 also covers other roads designated by decree and marked with start and end signs.
Look at the access and end signs, any supplementary panels and current restrictions. If the classification of a particular section is unclear, ask the road owner or operator rather than relying on an old map or an online post. A route can change class partway through: a city section may be different from the motorway connector that follows it. Plan each part separately and do not enter a ramp until you know its class.
For a 125, check engine size, age and licence
Since 14 December 2024, a combustion motorcycle of at least 120 cc can use roads covered by Article 175 when ridden by an adult. A 125 meets the size threshold, but a 17-year-old does not meet the age condition. For electric motorcycles, the alternative threshold is at least 6 kW, again with an adult rider.
This road-access rule does not decide which licence you need. Check Article 116, the motorcycle's approved data and your licence restrictions. A 125 model can have different versions. Frequently asked questions
Is every ring road a main extra-urban road?
No. The informal name does not determine its legal class. Check the signs and classification of each section.
Can every adult ride a 125 on it?
No. The rider needs a licence that covers that motorcycle, the vehicle must meet the relevant threshold and specific restrictions must be absent.
