Child car seats: how to choose and fit the right one
Choose an approved restraint that is compatible with both the child and the car, and fit it according to both sets of instructions.
The Highway Code requires children to use suitable restraint systems. Choosing and fitting one depends on the child’s height, approval, compatibility with the vehicle and the manufacturer’s instructions.
Choose for the child and the vehicle
The law requires children to be secured in an approved restraint system suited to their characteristics. Article 172 of the Highway Code links the requirement to height; choosing a seat solely by age or an advertised weight range is not appropriate. Read the approval label and the manufacturer’s instructions, then check that the model is compatible with the car’s seat, seat belt and anchor points.
Approval rules and the products on sale can change. Check that the seat is approved under the applicable rules and has not been damaged in a collision or recalled. A second-hand seat with no known history may have hidden damage or missing parts. If you use more than one car, check compatibility and fit each time: not all systems are installed in the same way.
- Follow the height and size range specified for the seat.
- Check its approval, condition and compatibility with the car seat.
- Follow the instructions for both the child seat and the vehicle.
Fit it without improvising
Depending on the model, the seat may be secured with the vehicle belt or dedicated anchor points. Route the belt through the correct guides, secure the anchors and check that the seat moves no more than the manual allows. For a rear-facing seat, follow the instructions about the front airbag: an active airbag in front of a rear-facing seat can create a serious risk. Do not modify the seat or use accessories the manufacturer has not approved.
Once the child is strapped in, check that the harness is adjusted and snug as instructed. Thick coats can interfere with the harness fitting correctly, so follow the manufacturer’s advice on clothing. If you are unsure, ask a specialist retailer or a trained technician to check the installation.
Every journey matters
Each seat must be fitted so that the belt or anchor does its intended job. Do not route the belt over armrests or through guides that are not specified, and do not leave slack in the harness. If the system is compatible with ISOFIX, check the engagement indicators and support leg, if fitted. Correct installation depends on small details: keep the manual in the car and consult it whenever you change the setup.
