Does a restriction apply outside the times shown?

If a supplementary plate limits a restriction to certain days or times, read it together with the main sign and any exceptions.

A supplementary plate may specify the days, times, vehicle categories or duration covered by the sign above it. The restriction applies in that context: read the sign and plate together and do not extend the times to another access or road section.

The plate completes the sign

A supplementary plate showing days or times specifies when the main sign applies. For example, if a restriction sign has ‘08:00–20:00’ below it, the time limit describes the period stated on the plate; outside those hours the sign does not impose that time-limited restriction, unless another rule or sign keeps it in force. Always read the plate with the sign above it, as the plate may not make sense on its own.

Check the context too: the plate may refer to a vehicle category, a section of road, a direction or a duration. Words such as ‘except’, ‘loading and unloading’, vehicle symbols and public holidays can change the scope. In an urban street, several signs close together may apply to different accesses or sides. Before entering, identify which sign governs the lane you are about to use.

Do not assume that a time plate makes it lawful to park or drive when a restriction is suspended: other rules may still apply, such as general no-stopping rules, reserved spaces, restricted traffic zones or temporary orders. Do not guess what a covered, damaged or contradictory sign means. Drive cautiously and report it to the road authority if it creates uncertainty.

  • Match the plate to the main sign it accompanies.
  • Read the days, times, permitted categories and road section.
  • Other restrictions or general rules may still apply outside the stated hours.
  • Check for further plates and temporary signs.

How to read an example

Imagine a no-parking sign with a ‘0–24’ plate and a smaller ‘except residents’ plate below it. The general restriction applies at all times, while the exception applies only to the stated category and under the relevant conditions. If the plate instead says ‘Mon–Fri 08:00–18:00’, the time period does not automatically include Saturday; check for other plates or local rules adding further times.

When temporary signs are in place for roadworks, follow them and the directions of site staff, as they may temporarily change traffic arrangements.

Frequently asked questions

If a restriction shows certain times, can I park outside those hours?

Only if no other signs, orders or general rules apply. Read the complete sign, any further plates and the rules for the area.

Does ‘except residents’ apply to every resident?

The exception depends on how it is defined and signed, and may require a permit or authorisation. Check the conditions set by the local council or managing authority.
