Road signs
Can a local restriction keep a 125 cc motorcycle off a ring road?
A 125 may enter only if the road is an eligible type and no valid restriction applies to that section.
Yes. A posted restriction can bar a 125 cc motorcycle even when it meets the general Article 175 threshold. Identify the road classification first, then read the signs and any local order.
The word ring road is not enough
“Tangenziale” is a common name, not a legal road category by itself. The Italian Highway Code distinguishes motorways from main extra-urban roads, among other classes. Article 175 regulates access to those classes, but a road called a ring road may have another classification or a specific rule. Check the start and end signs, supplementary panels and restrictions for motorcycles or vehicles with particular characteristics.
Since 14 December 2024, Law 177/2024 has added an exception to Article 175: motorcycles with an engine displacement of at least 120 cc, or electric motorcycles with at least 6 kW, may use motorways and main extra-urban roads when ridden by an adult. This removed the former general obstacle for 125 cc motorcycles in the covered cases. It does not make every ring road accessible, and it does not cancel a restriction posted for a particular section. The rider still needs a licence valid for that motorcycle.
Example: a 22-year-old with the right licence rides a 125 cc petrol motorcycle on a section classified as a main extra-urban road. The 120 cc threshold is met. If an entrance sign prohibits motorcycles, that restriction still applies. On a different ring road without that sign, access depends on its legal classification, the other Article 175 requirements and the signs on that route.
Check the section and the motorcycle
Before entering, check the classification and posted limits. If the local road name does not make the legal class clear, consult the road operator or owner and the order cited by the sign. Do not infer the rule from a sign on a different ramp: a restriction may apply in one direction or only to part of the network.
For the motorcycle, read the approved engine displacement or power on its documents and check that your licence covers that exact vehicle. The access threshold is not a licence category. A 125 cc motorcycle may meet the road threshold while its rider still lacks the correct licence. Quiz Patente Ufficiale can help you review road signs and traffic rules so you can distinguish general access rules from a local restriction.

Frequently asked questions
Can every 125 cc motorcycle use a ring road?
No. Since 2024 the general threshold for some roads has changed, but you still need to check the section’s classification, signs and whether your licence covers the motorcycle.
Does a local ban apply if the bike exceeds 120 cc?
Yes, when the sign prohibits that type of vehicle and applies to the section. Article 175’s threshold does not cancel a specific restriction.
