Professional qualifications
Taxi and bus: do you need passenger CQC or CAP KB?
Taxi/NCC services with B/B1 vehicles require CAP KB; professional buses require the right D category and CQC where applicable.
For taxi or NCC service using a vehicle requiring B1 or B, MIT provides for CAP KB alongside the ordinary driving licence. Professional bus driving requires the appropriate D or D1 category and passenger CQC where applicable. CAP KB and passenger CQC are different qualifications.
CAP KB applies to taxi and NCC cars
The professional certificate, or CAP, accompanies the driving licence and authorises certain taxi and chauffeur-hire passenger services. CAP KB applies to vehicles requiring B1 or B; CAP KA applies to vehicles requiring A1, A2 or A. MIT’s KB procedure requires the corresponding valid licence and first-aid training among other stated conditions.
CAP does not replace the ordinary driving licence and is not the same as passenger CQC. Check that the service, vehicle category and professional qualification match. A taxi car does not require category D merely because it carries customers; the licence category follows the vehicle, while the professional certificate follows the service.
Buses require D and CQC
A bus is designed to carry more than eight passengers besides the driver. D1 may cover a minibus with up to 16 passengers besides the driver and a length of no more than 8 metres; larger or longer vehicles require D. Professional passenger transport in D/D1 vehicles requires CQC in the cases set by law.
CQC is not an expanded CAP KB, and CAP KB does not authorise an autobus. If a service has unusual features, do not infer the qualification from the word “NCC”: check the vehicle category, actual service and the MIT requirements.
Example
A taxi car in category B requires the B licence and CAP KB for the service. A bus used for professional passenger transport requires D or D1 according to seats and length, plus passenger CQC where applicable. The qualification is not chosen only because both vehicles carry passengers.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps study categories with quizzes and mistake review; taxi/NCC and bus services require different professional qualifications.
