Licence categories
Road tractor unit: when do I need a category C licence?
Category C is required for a road tractor unit over 3,500 kg; a heavy semitrailer may require CE.
For a road tractor unit, check its recorded class and authorised maximum mass: category C covers motor vehicles over 3,500 kg that are not D1 or D vehicles. If the combination tows a trailer or semitrailer with an authorised maximum mass above 750 kg, check whether CE is required.
“Tractor” can mean different vehicles
In road haulage, “tractor unit” often means a motor vehicle designed to pull a semitrailer. It should not be confused with an agricultural tractor, which has a different classification. To determine whether C is required, read the registration document: the vehicle category and authorised maximum mass matter more than a name used in an advert or at work. Category C covers motor vehicles other than D1 and D vehicles, with an authorised maximum mass above 3,500 kg, designed for no more than eight passengers besides the driver.
The licence check applies to the vehicle or combination you drive. If you drive the tractor unit without a trailer, check its recorded class and mass; above 3,500 kg, C will generally be the relevant category. If you couple a semitrailer, check its authorised maximum mass and the categories printed on your licence too. Category C permits a trailer up to 750 kg; for a C vehicle with a trailer above 750 kg, check CE. Holding C does not automatically include CE just because the tractor is used to pull semitrailers at work.
For example, if the tractor unit’s document shows an authorised maximum mass of 18,000 kg and the semitrailer is authorised at 30,000 kg, the trailer exceeds the light-trailer threshold, so CE must be checked. If you drive the same tractor unit without the semitrailer, the CE category is not automatically needed for the tractor alone; category C remains the central check.
Check the tractor unit, combination and licence codes
Before a trip, compare the authorised masses in the tractor unit and semitrailer documents, then check your licence and any restrictions. Do not substitute today’s actual weight for authorised maximum mass: the trailer licence category is determined from the recorded figure. If the vehicle is an agricultural tractor informally called a “tractor”, check its separate approval class, intended use and licence requirements.

Frequently asked questions
Can I drive a road tractor unit with a semitrailer on category C?
C covers the motor vehicle and a trailer up to 750 kg authorised maximum mass. For a semitrailer above 750 kg, check category CE.
Does “road tractor unit” always mean I need category C?
No. Check the recorded category and authorised maximum mass. An agricultural tractor is classified differently from a road tractor unit.
