Motor tricycle: when is A1 enough, and when is another category needed?

A1 covers tricycles up to 15 kW; in Italy B also covers more powerful tricycles from age 21, subject to a territorial limit.

An A1 licence permits motor tricycles up to 15 kW from age 16. In Italy, a B licence also permits tricycles over 15 kW from age 21, but only within Italy; the relevant A category is another route under the rules for the vehicle. First confirm that the vehicle is a tricycle, not a motorcycle with a sidecar.

The 15 kW threshold changes the relevant category

For motor tricycles, Article 116 of the Italian Highway Code assigns those with power not exceeding 15 kW to A1. A1 is available from age 16. If a tricycle exceeds 15 kW, category A permits it subject to the age requirements in Article 115. Italy also has a national extension allowing B holders to ride these more powerful tricycles, but only once they have turned 21. This extension is not valid abroad: outside Italy, check the A category and local recognition.

A B licence also covers A1 vehicles within Italy under Article 125. That does not turn B into a European A1 licence; this Italian extension is territorial. If you travel abroad, hold a foreign licence or have restrictions printed on your licence, do not automatically apply the national rule. Check which licence you hold, where and when it was issued, and any codes shown. A 20-year-old B holder cannot use the extension for a tricycle over 15 kW. From age 21, B can be sufficient in Italy, while international travel requires checking which recognised category covers that vehicle.

Identify the vehicle before applying the threshold. A tricycle has three wheels arranged symmetrically around its longitudinal axis; a motorcycle with a sidecar has a lateral wheel and belongs to the motorcycle family. Some scooters with two front wheels are type-approved as tricycles; other similar-looking models may be motorcycles. Read the type-approval category and recorded power rather than relying on the visible wheel count or sales name. If the power is close to 15 kW, check the legally relevant value in the vehicle documents.

Examples and checks before riding

A type-approved tricycle with a net power of 14 kW falls within A1; a B holder can ride A1 vehicles in Italy under the national extension, and the age threshold for tricycles over 15 kW does not apply because this vehicle remains below it. An 18 kW model is above the A1 range: a B holder may ride it in Italy only after turning 21; do not assume B is enough abroad. Power is not engine displacement: use the kW figure and type-approval category for this distinction.

Check the vehicle category, power, your licence category and codes, your age, and the country where you will ride. The MIT page and Article 116 describe the entitlement; the vehicle documents identify the specific model. The app supports theory study but cannot certify your individual entitlement or replace checking the documents. Frequently asked questions

Can I ride a 20 kW tricycle with a B licence?

In Italy, only after turning 21, under the national B extension. Abroad, that rule does not automatically apply: check that you hold the A category required for that country and vehicle classification.

Is every three-wheel vehicle a tricycle for licence purposes?

No. It may be an L2e moped, a motor tricycle or a motorcycle with a sidecar. The category in the registration document and its type-approval data determine which rule applies.
