Crosswinds: how they affect cars, motorbikes and high-sided vehicles

Crosswinds can push a vehicle sideways, especially on bridges and high-sided vehicles: slow down and keep a steady course.

Where to expect gusts

Crosswinds are not always constant. They can hit harder as you leave a tunnel, cross a bridge, pass a barrier or travel between buildings. A lorry or bus may shelter you for a few seconds, then leave your vehicle exposed to a gust. Anticipate these points, keep to a moderate speed and look well ahead to monitor your course without fixating on the edge of the road.

High-sided vehicles with a large area exposed to the wind, such as vans, motorhomes and lorries, may move more than a low car. A trailer adds instability, while on a motorbike the wind can act directly on your body and handlebars. Do not compensate with sharp steering: keep a firm but relaxed grip and make gradual corrections. Reduce speed especially if you are carrying bulky loads or the trailer is swaying.

When overtaking, leave more lateral space and be ready for changes in aerodynamic pressure. If gusts are strong or unpredictable, postpone the journey or stop in a sheltered area. Wind reports and weather warnings can help you decide, but the effect depends on exposure and vehicle type.

  • Reduce speed and keep a steady course.
  • Expect gusts on bridges, at tunnel exits and on exposed stretches.
  • High-sided vehicles, motorbikes and trailer combinations need extra care.
  • If the vehicle is difficult to control, stop somewhere safe or postpone the journey.

If a gust pushes your vehicle

Keep control without making a sudden steering movement. Correct gradually, reduce speed without braking sharply and increase your distance from other vehicles. If the wind keeps pushing you towards another lane, slow down and reach a sheltered stopping place as soon as you can; do not stop in an exposed lane or on a bridge.

Check information from the road authority: there may be temporary bans on vehicles with trailers or restrictions on bridges. Do not judge by the car in front, whose shape and weight may be different.

Frequently asked questions

Should I grip the steering wheel more tightly in strong winds?

Keep a steady two-handed grip and correct your course gradually; a rigid grip or sudden movements can make the vehicle harder to control.

Are crosswinds dangerous only for lorries?

No. They can push cars, motorbikes, motorhomes and vehicles with trailers. The effect depends on shape, load, speed and gust strength.
