Converted van: which licence applies after the conversion?

Check the registered category, maximum authorised mass and seats after conversion; the builder’s description alone does not decide the licence.

A converted van does not automatically keep the same licence requirements. Category B depends on its registered vehicle type, maximum authorised mass and approved seats. After conversion, check that the work was approved and the vehicle registration shows the updated configuration.

Use the registered vehicle data

Category B normally covers motor vehicles with a maximum authorised mass up to 3,500 kg, designed for no more than eight passengers besides the driver. A converted van may be registered as a motor caravan, but an advert or the converter’s label is not enough: the official vehicle category and technical data control the licence check.

Compare maximum authorised mass, approved seats and vehicle category on the registration certificate. Do not substitute tare or the actual weight on a particular trip for the authorised mass. Furniture, batteries, water tanks and seats can affect weight and approval, but they do not themselves change the registered limits.

A conversion may need formal approval

Changes to the structure, seats or intended use may require approval and an update to the registration records. An unapproved conversion can create a separate compliance problem even if the driver holds the otherwise appropriate licence. Ask the Motor Vehicle Office or an authorised inspection centre what applies to the specific conversion.

Above 3,500 kg, category B is not ordinarily enough. C1 may cover certain vehicles over 3,500 kg and up to 7,500 kg; heavier or differently classified vehicles may require C. The narrow Italian alternative-fuel exception up to 4,250 kg concerns certain goods vehicles without a trailer. It is not a general motorhome allowance.

Example before driving

If the updated document records a motor caravan at 3,500 kg and no more than eight passenger seats, B may fit, subject to the licence entries. If it records 3,800 kg, the ordinary B limit is exceeded even when the van is lightly loaded. Resolve any mismatch between conversion papers and registration before driving.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers theory quizzes and review of mistakes about licence categories. It cannot verify an individual van’s approval; use its official documents for that decision.

Frequently asked questions

Does a camper conversion always keep the van in category B?

No. Check registered category, approved seats and maximum authorised mass after conversion.

If the van weighs less than 3,500 kg today, is B enough?

The ordinary B test uses the maximum authorised mass on the registration document, not the actual weight on that trip.
