Cargo sticking out from a trailer: which rules should I check?

Check the allowed dimensions, direction and warning requirements, as well as load restraint and mass limits.

Cargo may extend beyond a trailer only within the dimensions and conditions set by the Highway Code. Distinguish rear from side overhang, use the prescribed warning panel where required and secure the load without covering lights or plates. Check the exact setup before setting off.

Measure the vehicle and the overhang

Italian Articles 61 and 164 cover vehicle dimensions and cargo placement. A projecting object must not be assessed only against the trailer bed: the rule depends on how far it extends beyond the rear or side of the vehicle and on the kind of cargo. The Code sets specific limits and warning requirements. The direction of the projection matters, so one warning rule cannot be applied automatically to every object that sticks out.

Before loading, measure the full length and width with the cargo in place and check the legal limits. For rear projections, the Code sets a maximum related to vehicle length and requires a reflective warning panel in the cases specified for longitudinal projections. Side projections follow their own rules and are not automatically covered by the same panel requirement. Consult the current wording and applicable signs for the exact configuration.

Example: a long pole extends behind the trailer. Tying it with rope is not enough. Measure the overhang, confirm that it is within the permitted limit, fit the required panel and make sure it cannot swing, obscure a light or plate, or create a hazard. If it exceeds the limit or cannot be secured, arrange a different way to carry it.

Secure and mark the load

Use proper restraints and anchor points so the load cannot shift in a turn or under braking. Keep lights, reflectors and registration plates visible. The load must also remain within authorised mass, payload and axle limits; compliance with the size rules does not permit overloading.

For unusual projections, read the current versions of Articles 61 and 164 and check with the relevant authority. Do not assume an exception because another vehicle carried a similar object. Frequently asked questions

Must I put a warning panel on every projecting load?

The Code distinguishes the type and direction of the projection. Check current Article 164 to see when a panel is required and which one to use.

Can a marked projection exceed the maximum vehicle dimensions?

No. A warning panel does not create an exception to dimensional, mass or cargo-safety limits.
