Licence categories
Motorcycle trailer: does the loaded motorcycle’s weight count for the licence?
Licence category uses the authorised maximum masses; safe towing also depends on actual load and the car’s towing limit.
To choose the driving category, use the authorised maximum masses of the towing vehicle and trailer, not the motorcycle’s weight on that trip. Separately, the actual load must stay within the trailer’s capacity and the car’s approved towing limit.
Licence category and technical capacity are different checks
Category B covers specified vehicle combinations according to the maximum authorised masses in their documents. A trailer up to 750 kg can generally be towed with B if the car is suitable. For a trailer above 750 kg, the authorised mass of the whole combination matters. Code 96 applies when the combination exceeds 3,500 kg but does not exceed 4,250 kg; above that, BE may be required, subject to the trailer’s own limits.
The motorcycle’s mass on the trailer does not reduce the trailer’s maximum authorised mass for the licence calculation. It does matter for safe and lawful loading: motorcycle, trailer and accessories must remain within payload, gross mass and axle limits. The car also has a maximum trailer mass and an allowed vertical load at the coupling.
Read both vehicle documents
Check the car registration document for braked or unbraked towing capacity and nose weight. On the trailer document, find its maximum authorised mass. For the licence calculation, use the car and trailer maximum authorised masses together. Weighing the empty trailer or using a lighter motorcycle does not change those registered values. MIT guidance says the B-category towing limit for TATS trailers is based exclusively on maximum authorised mass.
Before a trip, calculate the actual load to avoid overloading the trailer, axles or tyres. Secure the motorcycle at the intended points, distribute the weight and check brakes, lights, straps and jockey wheel. If the documents do not clearly match, ask the Motor Vehicle Office or manufacturer rather than relying only on a scale reading.
Example
A trailer approved at 750 kg remains a 750 kg trailer for the licence check even if the motorcycle weighs 220 kg and the empty trailer 180 kg. The actual combined load of 400 kg is used to check that the trailer and car can tow it. If the car’s maximum authorised mass is 2,000 kg, the authorised combination may total 2,750 kg; still verify the official limits for both vehicles.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers theory quizzes and mistake review about licence categories. It does not calculate your car’s towing capacity: compare the vehicle documents and coupling limits before travelling.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps study licence categories with quizzes and mistake review; towing capacity must be checked in the car and trailer documents.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use the motorcycle’s low actual weight to stay within category B?
No. The licence calculation uses the combination’s maximum authorised masses, not the loaded motorcycle’s weight.
Does the right licence prove the car can tow the trailer?
No. You must also respect towing capacity, trailer payload, axle loads and the allowed vertical coupling load.
