Road rules
Can a 50 cc moped enter a motorway?
No. Mopeds remain excluded. The 2024 exception concerns motorcycles above a specific threshold, not 50 cc mopeds.
No. Article 175 excludes mopeds from motorways and main extra-urban roads. The 2024 exception concerns motorcycles of at least 120 cc or electric motorcycles of at least 6 kW ridden by adults, not a 50 cc moped.
The exception does not turn a moped into a motorcycle
A moped with an engine capacity of 50 cc cannot enter a motorway or main extra-urban road. Article 175 lists mopeds among the excluded vehicles. Law 177/2024 added an exception for certain motorcycles, but it did not remove the moped exclusion. The Code uses these terms for different vehicle categories.
For combustion motorcycles the new threshold is at least 120 cc; for electric motorcycles it is at least 6 kW. The rider must be an adult in either case. A moped's usual engine size, a seller's speed claim or the presence of a registration plate does not make it an eligible motorcycle. Check the vehicle category and approval on its registration certificate; do not infer it from the bodywork, an unauthorised modification or a speedometer reading.
Choose a route open to the vehicle category
If you need to reach a destination on a moped, choose roads open to that category and check restrictions along the way. A road called a ring road may contain different sections. Do not enter a motorway connector simply because a sign points toward the same city. If the route is unclear, ask the road operator or choose an ordinary road you know is open to mopeds.
Access and licence are separate checks. Where a moped is allowed, the rider still needs the required AM entitlement and must comply with age and vehicle conditions. Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers exam quizzes and review of mistakes on categories, signs and traffic rules; it does not check the moped's approval or authorise motorway use.

Frequently asked questions
My 50 cc moped can go faster than 45 km/h. May I enter?
No. Its speed does not remove the moped exclusion or change its registered category. Do not enter a motorway with a vehicle approved as a moped.
Does the 120 cc threshold apply to every two-wheeler?
No. It is part of the motorcycle exception. Article 175 continues to exclude mopeds; electric motorcycles use the separate 6 kW threshold and the adult-rider condition.
