Licence categories
How do you get a C1 licence, and which exams does it include?
C1 is available from age 18 with a category B licence and requires theory and practical tests under current MIT procedures.
A C1 licence is available from age 18 and requires an existing category B licence. The process includes a theory test and a practical driving test. The test vehicle, booking steps and documents must follow current MIT and Motor Vehicle Office instructions.
C1 requirements and scope
C1 authorises vehicles over 3,500 kg and up to 7,500 kg, other than D1/D vehicles, designed for no more than eight passengers besides the driver. MIT lists a minimum age of 18 and a category B licence as requirements. C1 can also be issued with code 97, which restricts driving to vehicles not subject to tachograph rules.
Before applying, decide which version you need: ordinary C1 or C1 with code 97. Code 97 narrows the vehicles you may drive; ordinary C1 covers the category without that restriction. If you plan to drive professionally, separately check whether the work requires CQC.
Tests and application
The MIT procedure includes a theory test and a practical driving test. Application documents, medical fitness, payments and booking steps can be updated, so use the Ministry page and current Motor Vehicle Office instructions when applying. A learner permit is issued after passing the theory test under the applicable process.
The test vehicle must meet the minimum characteristics prescribed for C1 and any code 97 route. Do not book on the assumption that any C1 truck is suitable: ask the driving school which configuration will be presented and which procedure applies to your application. Passing the test authorises you only within the categories and codes recorded on the licence.
Example
If you are 18 and hold category B, ask a driving school about applying for C1, decide whether you need the code 97 version and prepare for theory and practical tests in an appropriate vehicle. If your goal is to drive a truck over 7,500 kg, C1 is not enough; assess category C. If you will carry goods professionally, CQC may also be required.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers theory quizzes and mistake review to support study; practical tests, vehicles and applications follow official procedures and driving-school arrangements.
