Professional qualifications
At what age can I drive a bus professionally with a CQC?
With D/DE and passenger CQC, minimum age depends on the course and service; ordinary and accelerated routes differ.
The minimum age for professional bus driving with D or DE and a passenger CQC is not a single figure. The decree provides 21 years after the ordinary course, 23 after the accelerated course, and a specific 21-year route for accelerated CQC on line services up to 50 km. D1/D1E follow a separate rule.
Age and the CQC course route determine eligibility
Legislative Decree 286/2005 links the minimum age for professional driving to the category and initial qualification route. At 21, a driver may drive D/DE vehicles with a CQC obtained after the ordinary initial course and examination. The accelerated course for D/DE normally leads to a minimum age of 23. The law also allows a specific route from 21 for line services with a journey no longer than 50 km when the driver has completed the accelerated course and passed its exam. These rules govern professional driving; they do not change the D licence requirements when no CQC is held.
For D1/D1E, the decree provides an age of 21 when the driver holds a CQC obtained after the accelerated course and examination. Do not transfer the 23-year rule for the accelerated D/DE route automatically to D1. Holding category D or DE alone is also not enough for professional passenger transport: the passenger CQC and the course conditions matter. Read the category and type of service together.
For example, a 21-year-old with D and a CQC earned through the ordinary course can access professional driving under that route. A 21-year-old with an accelerated CQC for D/DE may drive only the specific line service up to 50 km covered by the rule; for broader driving under that accelerated route the threshold is 23. Confirm the course record, category and assigned service before taking a shift.
Documents to confirm with the employer
Check your D or DE category, passenger CQC validity and evidence of the initial course type. Ask the employer which service you will operate and what line distance is authorised; labels such as “urban bus” or “regional” do not replace the decree’s definition. For D1/D1E, confirm the category and corresponding CQC. If the service changes, check again that your age and qualification permit the new assignment.
