Professional qualifications
CQC for goods and CQC for passengers: differences and uses
The two CQC qualifications cover different professional transport activities and do not replace the driving licence.
The goods CQC and passenger CQC are different qualifications. The first covers professional transport of goods in C1, C1E, C or CE vehicles; the second covers passenger transport in D1, D1E, D or DE vehicles. Both are valid for five years.
Two professional fields
The goods CQC covers the professional qualification linked to certain goods transport activities; the passenger CQC covers professional passenger transport. They are not interchangeable names and do not replace the driving licence: the driver must also hold the category appropriate to the vehicle, such as C for some lorries or D for buses. Depending on the job, both qualifications and other requirements may apply.
The required qualification depends on the actual activity, not only on whether the vehicle is a lorry or a bus. Private use, own-account transport, specific services and legal exemptions can lead to different outcomes. Do not infer the requirement from a general definition: describe the goods or passengers, purpose, employment relationship and vehicle precisely, then check the rule with the MIT and the competent office.
The CQC is valid for five years and is renewed through the required periodic training. Some transport is exempt, for example transport for private, non-commercial purposes. Check which qualification is recorded on your driving licence or CQC document and its expiry date.
- Goods and passenger CQC qualifications have separate syllabuses and scopes.
- The vehicle driving licence remains a separate requirement.
- Check the activity and any exemptions before starting work.
Obtaining and maintaining the qualification
To obtain a CQC, you must complete training and assessments in accordance with ministerial rules. The qualification has its own validity period and requires periodic training for renewal. If you want to add the other field, ask whether your current qualification can be extended or whether a specific course is required. Timescales, documents, costs and arrangements may change: consult the MIT page and the Motorizzazione office instructions rather than relying only on course promotional material.
While working, monitor the CQC and driving licence expiry dates separately. If either is suspended, expired or restricted, seek clarification before returning to work. Your employer can help check the qualifications required, but every driver should make sure their own qualifications are valid and match their duties.
Choosing the right training
Anyone driving different vehicle categories during the week should check which qualification is required for each shift, not just their main qualification. An occasional service may be subject to different rules from regular transport; frequency alone, however, does not establish an exemption. Keep your certificates and check that the CQC records the correct qualification. If you switch from goods to passengers or vice versa, ask in advance whether additional training is needed and how it will be recorded.
