Moving from A1 to A2: do I have to retake the theory test?

A1 holders can obtain A2 by taking only the practical test, under the procedure published by the MIT.

If you already hold an A1 licence, the MIT says you can obtain A2 through examination by taking only the practical test; you do not retake theory. You must still complete the application and administrative requirements and pass the practical test on an eligible vehicle.

When theory is not repeated

The Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT) says that holders of A1, B1, B or BE may obtain A2 or A by taking only the practical test. Therefore an A1 holder moving to A2 by examination does not take a new theory test. This applies to holders of the categories listed and does not make the upgrade automatic: you must submit the required application and pass the riding test.

The practical test checks the higher category using an eligible A2 motorcycle. The MIT lists a motorcycle without a sidecar, with nominal power from 20 to 35 kW and a power-to-weight ratio no higher than 0.2 kW/kg; a combustion motorcycle must meet the stated minimum engine capacity, subject to the published tolerance. Code 78 may appear if the test uses an automatic. Having passed A1 theory does not remove the need to prepare for the A2 practical test.

For example, someone with a valid A1 licence can apply for A2 without repeating theory, but must book and pass the practical test. If the A1 licence has expired, is suspended or carries a relevant restriction, do not assume the same process applies: confirm your situation with the Motorizzazione before paying or booking.

Before you book

Prepare your A1 licence, the required documents and details of the motorcycle you plan to use. Ask the office or driving school about the process for existing licence holders and available dates. Waiving the theory test does not waive the practical test or allow you to ride an A2 motorcycle before you have obtained that category.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale can help review road theory by chapter, take quizzes and revisit mistakes, even though the MIT procedure does not require a new theory test for this upgrade. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review road rules with category B quizzes and mistake review.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review common rules through chapters, exam quizzes and error review.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to retake theory to move from A1 to A2?

No. Under the MIT examination procedure, an A1 holder can obtain A2 by taking only the practical test. You still need to apply and pass the riding test.

Can I ride an A2 motorcycle as soon as I apply?

No. Applying does not extend your current licence. You may ride within A2 limits only after obtaining the new category and meeting its conditions.
