A licence limited to 12 miles authorises navigation within that distance from the coast. The unlimited-distance qualification covers navigation beyond 12 miles, subject to the licence category, craft and other applicable rules. The wording on the document matters: do not infer the entitlement from the course name or the boat you used during training.
The examination also differs. Under the ministerial programme, the within-12-mile route includes a chartwork quiz, while the unlimited route requires a chartwork exercise with four independent questions, at least three correct within 60 minutes. Match the document to the vessel and route
Before renting or planning a passage, compare the licence's distance and propulsion entitlement with the route and the vessel's category. A licence without a distance limit does not automatically allow every boat, and a 12-mile licence does not cover an offshore passage beyond its stated range.
