DE practical test: what bus and trailer combination is required?

The DE test trailer must meet MIT mass, width, speed, load-space and actual-mass requirements.

For the Italian DE practical test, MIT requires a vehicle suitable for category D paired with a trailer rated at least 1,250 kg, at least 2.40 m wide and capable of at least 80 km/h. It also needs a closed load space of the specified minimum dimensions and at least 800 kg actual total mass at the test. D1E has different requirements.

Distinguish DE from D1E

DE and D1E are separate categories. MIT describes D1E as a combination with a vehicle suitable for the D1 test and a trailer over 750 kg; DE uses a vehicle suitable for category D. The towing vehicle categories differ, among other things, in passenger capacity and length. Exam-vehicle requirements do not change that classification and do not alone decide which licence is needed for everyday driving.

For the DE test, MIT specifies a trailer with a maximum authorised mass of at least 1,250 kg, width of at least 2.40 m and design speed of at least 80 km/h. Its load space must be a closed box at least 2 m high and wide, and it must be presented with at least 800 kg actual total mass. Keep the two mass concepts separate: the authorised limit is the approved rating; actual mass is the weight on the test day.

Example: the trailer document shows a 1,300 kg limit, but the trailer weighs 760 kg at the test. It meets the rated-mass threshold but not the 800 kg actual-mass minimum. Also check width, speed and load box; do not confuse exam specifications with the bus’s own towing limit.

Check the documents for the booked vehicle

Ask the school or examination office for the combination’s current technical details and compare them with the MIT D1E–DE page. Confirm that the bus is suitable for category D and that the trailer meets each threshold. The documents must match the vehicle presented. Check other current notes on equipment, gearbox limitations and test organisation before booking.

The assessment is practical: manoeuvres relate to the requested category and should be practised with an instructor on a suitable bus-and-trailer combination. Professional passenger transport may also require CQC, separately from the driving licence. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps with common theory and category rules but does not simulate driving a bus with a trailer.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers quizzes for common rules and categories; DE driving practice requires an instructor and suitable vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

Must the DE exam trailer have an actual mass of 1,250 kg?

No. Its authorised limit must be at least 1,250 kg; MIT specifies a separate actual-mass minimum of 800 kg at the test.

Can I use a D1E trailer for the DE test?

Do not assume so. The combination must meet DE-specific requirements and use a vehicle suitable for the D test.
