Category B practical test: what if I do not understand an instruction?
Do not guess a manoeuvre: ask for the instruction again and keep the car in a safe position.
If you do not understand a direction during the Italian category B practical test, calmly ask the examiner to repeat or clarify it. Do not change direction suddenly or make a risky manoeuvre because you fear interrupting the test. Continue to obey signs and traffic while waiting: you remain responsible for controlling the vehicle and keeping it safe.
Ask for clarification without losing control
The examiner gives route directions, but if a phrase is unclear, avoid interpreting it hastily. Maintain your lane and an appropriate speed, watch the road and ask for the direction to be repeated or specified. Do not turn for a long time toward the examiner while the car is moving, and do not brake sharply if traffic is close behind.
If the request comes at the last moment and you cannot carry it out safely, continue along the permitted path and explain that the manoeuvre could not be completed safely at that point. Do not cross a solid line, reverse suddenly or ignore a sign because of a misunderstood direction. If you need to stop to understand, do so only where it is allowed and safe.
Example: you hear ‘turn’ but cannot distinguish left from right near an intersection. Keep control, observe signs and lane markings, then ask the examiner to repeat the instruction. Do not steer toward an exit just to show a quick reaction.
Safety remains your responsibility
An instruction does not authorise an illegal or dangerous manoeuvre. Follow traffic lights, priority, limits and road arrows; if a direction seems inconsistent with signs, ask for clarification and continue according to the rules. The examiner can provide another direction, but you are driving and must control the car.
Practise with your instructor responding to directions given both early and near intersections while still watching traffic. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you revise signs and rules through quizzes and error review; communication while driving is practised in the car.

Frequently asked questions
Will asking the examiner to repeat a direction make me fail?
There is no automatic rule like that. Asking is better than improvising a risky manoeuvre.
If I understand the direction late, should I cross lanes immediately?
No. Do not make a sudden or prohibited lane change; continue safely and ask for another instruction.
