Category B practical test: can the exam take place at night?
Night driving is part of required training; the actual test time depends on the office.
A category B test may be scheduled in the evening or at night if the local office holds exams then, but every candidate is not required to take a night exam. Night driving is instead part of the mandatory training specified by MIT. Check the time on your test notice and complete the required training programme.
Training and the test are separate
The MIT category B page requires a certificate for at least six hours of mandatory driving practice, including night driving, motorways and main extra-urban roads under current rules. This is a training requirement and the driving school issues the certificate. It does not say that the exam must be held at night or set one schedule for all test centres.
The test time is given in the appointment notice and depends on the office’s organisation. Check the date, time and location, and ask your driving school whether any certificate or document must be presented. If the test takes place in low light, adapt your driving to the conditions: use lights correctly, adjust speed and distance, and observe the road carefully.
Example: a candidate completes the required night sessions but receives a test appointment at 10 a.m. The training is still complete even though the exam is in daylight. A candidate scheduled at dusk must adapt to available visibility and use the vehicle’s lighting controls correctly.
Prepare to see and be seen
In lessons, practise reducing speed when visible distance shortens, leaving room to stop and using lights as required. Keep the windscreen and mirrors clear and learn the car’s controls before driving. Avoid staring at oncoming headlights; continue checking the road edges and vulnerable road users.
If you are unsure whether your appointment is at night, ask the motor vehicle office or your driving school rather than relying on a story. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps revise light-related quizzes and traffic rules; night driving practice must be done with an instructor.
