Parallel parking in the Category B practical test

Position carefully, reverse at low speed, observe around the car and finish without touching the kerb or creating risk.

Parking is one of the manoeuvres that may be selected in the Category B practical test. The candidate may need to park and leave a space parallel, diagonally or perpendicular to the road, using forward or reverse as appropriate, while controlling the vehicle and observing traffic.

Set up the manoeuvre before reversing

The practical test assesses whether you can park safely in a space and leave it again. Before starting, choose a suitable position, signal when required and check traffic, pedestrians and parked vehicles. Move slowly and use the instructor's method to align the car; no fixed reference point works for every vehicle because length, visibility and steering differ.

During reverse, scan around continuously, look in the direction of travel and use the mirrors without relying on them alone. Make small steering corrections and stop before the car touches the kerb or another vehicle. If the space is not suitable or a hazard appears, pause and reassess rather than forcing the car into the gap.

Finish within the space and leave safely

The car should be positioned safely without obstructing traffic, and you should be able to leave the space under control. Check the clearance in front and behind, straighten the wheels when appropriate and secure the vehicle if the examiner asks you to finish parked. Before moving away, observe traffic again and signal when necessary.

For example, a narrow gap may require a small correction forward and then another controlled reverse. Do not assume one steering turn produces the same result in every car. Frequently asked questions

Is parallel parking the only parking manoeuvre in the test?

No. The programme includes parking in different configurations; the examiner selects a suitable manoeuvre.

Can I use a memorised reference point?

Use it only as a guide. Check actual clearances because reference points vary by car and space.
