Category B practical test: how do I reverse park without hitting anything?

Move slowly, check the space and traffic, and correct your position only when the area is clear.

In the Italian category B practical test, approach a bay parking manoeuvre by checking the space, moving slowly and monitoring your surroundings and path. Use mirrors and direct observation, stop before getting too close, and correct calmly if there is room. The aim is a controlled, safe manoeuvre, not a memorised steering angle.

Check the space before moving

Before starting, make sure the space is available and that the manoeuvre will not force another road user to change course. Look for nearby cars, pedestrians, cyclists, posts and markings. Signal when appropriate, but remember that an indicator does not give you priority. Keep the car at walking speed so you can stop and reassess the clearance.

As you enter the space, alternate between mirrors and direct observation rather than watching only one side. The car’s angles change as it turns: check the front, rear and both sides. If a reference point disappears or you are unsure of the distance, stop and look again before continuing. Do not rely on one fixed number of steering-wheel turns; the car, starting position and bay all differ.

Example: while reversing between two cars, the front corner gets close to the neighbouring vehicle. Stop, check front and rear, and continue only when the path is clear. If you need to move back into the traffic lane to correct, first make sure no vehicle or pedestrian is approaching.

Correct slowly and keep the area safe

If the car is not centred, you can consider a correction when the area remains clear and the exam instructions allow it. Move slowly, check the corners again and stop if an obstacle enters the space. Do not turn a correction into a series of quick movements: every change of direction requires another check.

The practical test assesses driving as a whole and whether you act safely. There is no reliable rule that every line touch or correction automatically fails you. Ask your instructor to practise with the exam car and the dimensions of the test area. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you revise theory, signs and exam questions, but it does not teach real parking manoeuvres.

To revise road rules and theory quizzes, Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers chapter-based study and error review; parking needs guided practice.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to park in one movement?

There is no universal steering sequence for every car and space. Keep the manoeuvre controlled and correct only when safe and allowed.

Will one correction or line touch automatically fail me?

Do not assume an automatic rule. The examiner assesses the test and, above all, safe driving; practise in the exam vehicle with your instructor.
