Category B practical test: how do I approach a roundabout and choose an exit?
Follow lane markings and signs, obey the indicated priority, and signal your exit without cutting across traffic.
For the Italian category B test, read the signs and lane markings before entering a roundabout, then match speed and position to your chosen exit. Priority depends on the signs at that location; do not assume rules that conflict with the signs. Before exiting, check vehicles beside and behind you, signal your manoeuvre and do not cut across another vehicle’s path.
Read the roundabout before entering
As you approach, look for priority signs, lane arrows and road markings. The correct lane depends on the number of exits and the signs, so there is no identical lane choice for every roundabout. Reduce speed enough to observe and stop if you must give way. Check for bicycles, motorcycles and pedestrians at crossings before entering the intersection.
If you must yield, wait for a gap that lets you enter without forcing other drivers to brake. Keep a path consistent with your lane and do not cross solid lines or mandatory arrows. If signs require a particular direction or lane, follow them even when a general rule you learned might suggest something else.
Example: you need the third exit, but arrows show that the outer lane is only for the first exit. Follow the arrows and select an allowed lane for your exit. Do not cut across the outer lane at the last moment to reach the exit.
Signal and check your exit path
Before leaving the roundabout, check the mirror and blind spot on the exit side, then use the indicator as required by the situation. Keep a steady speed and check the pedestrian crossing at the exit. If you cannot exit safely, continue along the permitted route and try again rather than steering suddenly.
The examiner may give a destination, but signs and traffic determine the safe lane and priority. Your instructor can practise different roundabout layouts with you. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps revise quizzes on signs and priority rules; it cannot replace real driving practice in a roundabout.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you revise quizzes on signs and priority rules through chapter-based study and error review.
Frequently asked questions
Must I always give way to vehicles already in a roundabout?
Read the signs and applicable rules at that location. Do not infer priority from the word ‘roundabout’ if the signs indicate otherwise.
Can I change lanes inside the roundabout to reach my exit?
Only if signs permit it and the change is safe. Do not cross another vehicle’s path or cut across lanes at the last moment.
