Category B practical test: when should I abandon an overtaking manoeuvre?
Do not overtake when visibility, space or legal conditions are missing; you must be able to complete it safely.
During the Italian category B practical test, abandon an overtaking manoeuvre when visibility, space or signs do not allow you to complete it safely. Check the road ahead, vehicles behind, centre markings and the speed of the vehicle in front. If in doubt, remain in your lane: choosing not to overtake is a sound driving decision.
Assess whether you can start and return
Before overtaking, check that the manoeuvre is permitted and the road is clear long enough for you to pull out, pass and return. Consider bends, crests, intersections, crossings, road markings, oncoming traffic and drivers who may already be overtaking you. Mirrors help you check behind, but also judge how quickly another vehicle is approaching.
Do not begin if markings prohibit overtaking, visibility is limited or the available space is too short to return without forcing anyone to brake. An indicator does not make a prohibited manoeuvre legal and does not require the vehicle ahead to make room. If conditions change while you are still in your lane, maintain a safe distance and wait.
Example: on an extra-urban road a truck is moving slowly, but the road ahead curves and visibility is blocked. Even if the opposing lane looks clear for a moment, do not start; you cannot see enough to complete the manoeuvre and return. Wait for a permitted straight section with enough room.
Choosing not to overtake is part of safe driving
If a hazard appears after you have started, do not accelerate blindly to finish. Assess the safest action, keep control and return without cutting anyone off. During lessons, do not practise risky overtaking on public roads; train with your instructor and follow their directions.
There is no universal list where every decision to wait is an error. The overall conduct, rules and safety matter. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you revise overtaking, signs and priority quizzes, but judging real space comes with supervised driving practice.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale lets you review overtaking-rule quizzes and errors; judging real road space takes practice with an instructor.
Frequently asked questions
If I never overtake during the test, does that mean I failed?
No. When legal and safe conditions are absent, declining to overtake is correct. There is no universal requirement to overtake on every route.
Does using an indicator make overtaking safe when visibility is limited?
No. A signal does not replace the visibility, space and legal conditions required for the manoeuvre.
