If the car stalls during the B practical test, do I fail?
A stall does not automatically mean failure; what matters is how you regain control and continue safely.
No. An engine stall alone does not automatically fail every candidate in every situation. Keep control of the car, assess traffic, restart using the procedure you learned and move off only when safe. The examiner assesses your overall conduct and any danger created, not a universal formula based on one inconvenience.
Handle the inconvenience safely
If the engine stalls, keep the car under control and use the brake to stop it rolling. Check what is happening around you: are you on a hill, in an intersection or in a queue? Do not release the clutch or accelerate impulsively. Follow the restart procedure taught by your instructor while staying aware of mirrors, pedestrians and approaching vehicles.
Once the engine starts, do not move until you have enough space and visibility. If you are stopped in an exposed position and are unsure what to do, listen to the examiner and act calmly. If the car will not restart, report it and wait for instructions rather than making repeated attempts that could worsen the situation.
Example: the engine stalls as you move off at a traffic light. Keep the brake applied, make sure the car will not roll backwards and restart using the procedure your instructor taught. Move only when the signal and traffic make it safe.
Distinguish a stall from unsafe conduct
A single stall can be a coordination mistake, while your response shows whether you maintain safety and control. There is no guarantee of the result: if the car rolls, blocks traffic dangerously or you cannot regain control, the examiner assesses the situation under the test rules. Avoid both invented automatic-fail rules and the idea that every stall is irrelevant.
Ask your instructor to practise moving off on level ground and on a slope, recovering without looking down for a long time. Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers theory quizzes and error review, but clutch and accelerator coordination is learned by driving.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you revise theory quizzes and review errors; driving coordination is practised with an instructor.
Frequently asked questions
If the engine stalls once, is the test over?
Not automatically. Keep the vehicle safe and follow the procedure; the result depends on the overall assessment and context.
Should I restart immediately if the car is in a dangerous position?
First check the vehicle and traffic. Do not move until it is safe; ask for instructions if needed.
