BE practical test: must I know how to check the trailer?

Yes: the BE test uses a compliant car-and-trailer combination and assesses safe management of the whole vehicle.

Yes. The BE practical test uses a category B towing vehicle and a trailer that meets MIT requirements, and assesses your ability to handle the combination. Prepare to check connections, visibility, lights and trailer behaviour as directed by your instructor and the current programme. The exam is separate from the ordinary licence calculation for a particular trip.

The combination requires specific checks

Before moving, check with your instructor that the coupling is secure, the electrical connection works, the required safety cable or device is in place, the lights function and the plate can be seen. Learn the exact procedure on the vehicle you will use; do not improvise coupling or uncoupling alone. MIT publishes minimum characteristics for the exam combination, including authorised and actual trailer-mass requirements.

On the road, remember that a trailer changes the combination’s length, path and stopping space. Check mirrors and blind spots before manoeuvres, watch the trailer’s rear and keep a suitable speed. Follow the examiner’s instruction and do not start until the area is clear.

Example: before moving, you notice that one rear indicator does not work. Do not continue as if the connection were correct. Stop and notify your instructor or examiner, then follow the vehicle-check procedure.

A licence does not replace technical limits

For BE, the authorised mass of the combination and trailer must fall within the category limits. The towing vehicle’s maximum towing mass, axle loads and hitch approval also remain binding after the exam. A compliant exam vehicle does not mean every car can tow every trailer.

Practise checks and manoeuvres with an instructor on the same type of combination. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you revise licence categories and theory quizzes on masses, but it does not train you to couple or drive a real trailer.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you revise licence categories and mass quizzes; BE coupling and driving need instructor-led practice.

Frequently asked questions

Should I check the trailer lights before moving?

Yes. Check the electrical connection and equipment using the procedure taught for the exam vehicle.

After passing BE, can I attach any trailer?

No. The car’s towing mass, approval, axle loads and compatibility still apply in addition to the licence category.
