Category C practical test: how do I prepare to reverse a truck?

Use mirrors and blind-spot checks, move slowly and stop if visibility is lost.

During the category C practical test, reversing requires you to manage the truck’s size and limited visibility. Check the area first, use adjusted mirrors and move at the lowest speed. If you lose your reference or another road user enters the path, stop and look again. Practise on the category vehicle with an instructor, not by memorising one steering sequence.

Prepare visibility and space

A truck may have areas that are not directly visible from the driver’s seat and a turning radius unlike a car. Before reversing, identify obstacles, height and width limits and the stopping point. Adjust the mirrors and check for pedestrians or vehicles behind, beside and in front. If the school uses an assistant during practice, follow the agreed procedure; during the exam, follow the examiner’s instructions.

Move slowly, using the clutch and brakes as taught for that truck. Alternate between mirrors and your surroundings, and do not continue if you cannot see the path. Make small corrections and account for the front of the vehicle when turning: the cab can swing outward. Avoid watching only one mirror for the whole manoeuvre.

Example: during a reverse, the right side disappears from the mirror. Stop before clearance becomes critical, check again and continue only when visibility is sufficient. If you cannot establish a safe view, ask what procedure to follow instead of moving blindly.

Practise on the truck with your instructor

Reference points depend on the model, load and space. Ask your instructor to show how to set up and correct the reverse on the exam truck, following the category programme. Do not copy generic tips that say to always turn the wheel in one direction.

The C test assesses driving and control of the heavy vehicle as a whole. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review road rules with category B quizzes and mistake review.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you revise common rules and theory quizzes; truck reversing needs lessons in a heavy vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reverse by watching only the mirrors?

No. Mirrors are essential, but also check the surrounding area and the front of the truck; stop if visibility is not enough.

Will an assistant outside the truck always be allowed?

Do not assume so. Follow the test procedure and office instructions; ask your driving school how to practise.
