Category D practical test: how do I stop and move off in a bus?
Check vehicle dimensions and road users, stop smoothly and move off only when there is enough visibility and space.
In the category D practical test, stopping and moving off in a bus requires attention to vehicle dimensions, visibility and passenger stability. Choose a permitted position, slow down smoothly and check the area before moving again. The test assesses handling of the category vehicle; do not apply car habits automatically to a bus.
Stop without creating a hazard
Before pulling in, check mirrors and traffic, consider the bus’s length and overhang, and confirm that stopping is permitted. Signal when required and slow down progressively to avoid jolting passengers. Do not approach obstacles, cyclists or pedestrians more closely than you can control. When stopping beside a kerb, pay attention to the right side and the rear overhang.
To move off, check mirrors and blind spots and assess the traffic flow. Confirm that doors and relevant equipment are in the required state. An indicator communicates your intention but does not give priority. Wait for enough space to merge without forcing other drivers to brake; if the gap is unsafe, remain stopped.
Example: a cyclist approaches along the right side while the bus is pulling in. Do not complete the manoeuvre by squeezing them against the kerb. Keep space, slow down and wait until the area is clear before stopping or moving off.
Adapt controls to the vehicle’s size
A bus needs different braking time, mirror use and lateral clearance from a car. Set the seat and mirrors before moving and choose a speed that allows a controlled stop. Avoid a sharp acceleration when moving off and monitor the rear of the vehicle during turns and pull-ins.
Category D concerns vehicles designed to carry more than eight passengers in addition to the driver, subject to the Code’s rules. CQC and professional use have separate requirements. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps with quizzes and common theory, but it does not provide bus-driving practice.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale lets you revise quizzes and common rules; practical bus driving takes instruction and practice.
Frequently asked questions
Can I move off as soon as I switch on the indicator?
No. The indicator gives no priority. Check mirrors and blind spots and merge only when there is a safe gap.
Should I brake sharply to stop at the indicated point?
No. Anticipate the stop and slow down progressively while maintaining control and passenger comfort.
