Direct-injection outboard: which displacement limit applies?

For a direct-injection two-stroke, the updated threshold is 900 cc; also check power and the engine documents.

For a direct-injection two-stroke within six miles, the displacement threshold is 900 cm³; the power test is independent. A licence is required if the engine exceeds 900 cm³ or 30 kW.

Direct injection has a specific threshold

The rule is not simply “outboard or inboard”. The updated law sets a 900 cc threshold for a two-stroke direct-injection engine. The power criterion is above 30 kW: if the engine exceeds that value, a licence is required; if it does not, displacement can still trigger the requirement when it is over 900 cc.

Do not confuse direct injection with carburation. A carburetted two-stroke has a different limit of 750 cc, and a four-stroke outboard has a 1,000 cc threshold. Confirm the engine cycle and fuel system from its technical record, since model names and sales descriptions may be ambiguous.

Use the documents for the engine actually installed

Check the model, serial number, power declaration and manufacturer's technical sheet. If a seller says only “two-stroke” or “injection”, ask whether it is direct injection and request the official specification. A product family can include versions with different displacement or configuration, so an online listing is not conclusive.

For example, an 850 cm³ direct-injection two-stroke at 25 kW stays below both applicable thresholds; a 950 cm³ engine requires a licence because it exceeds 900 cm³, even below 30 kW. An 850 cm³ engine at 32 kW also requires one because power exceeds 30 kW. Check the route and the engine records. Frequently asked questions

Does a 950 cc direct-injection two-stroke require a licence below 30 kW?

Yes. The updated threshold is 900 cc, so displacement can trigger the requirement below 30 kW.

Is it enough to know that the engine is an outboard?

No. Check displacement, power, cycle and fuel system in the declaration for the installed engine.
