Licence categories
At 17, does an AM licence let you start accompanied driving for category B?
No. MIT guidance requires an A1 or B1 licence, not AM, for 17-year-old accompanied driving towards category B.
No. At 17, holding only an AM licence does not meet the stated prerequisite for Italy’s accompanied-driving authorisation towards category B. MIT lists a valid A1 or B1 licence for this procedure. The authorisation is a regulated exercise arrangement and never permits driving alone.
AM is not the listed prerequisite
Italy’s accompanied-driving pathway lets certain 17-year-olds practise for category B with an approved accompanying driver. MIT’s current guidance says the minor must already hold a valid A1 or B1 licence. AM is a separate category for mopeds and light quadricycles, so an AM licence alone is not interchangeable with A1 or B1 for this requirement.
The pathway also involves an application by the parent or legal representative, an authorisation from the Motor Vehicle Office, a driving course and the required accompanying drivers. Being 17 and having AM does not grant permission to drive a category B car, whether alone or with an adult. The authorisation must be obtained before the relevant practice begins.
Do not confuse the two permissions
Accompanied driving under Article 115 is not the same as holding a category B licence. The minor may drive only under the authorisation’s conditions, with an approved accompanying driver and the vehicle restrictions that apply. The ordinary B learner permit has its own rules and is issued as part of the licensing process.
A separate MIT circular dated 9 October 2026 addresses practice on AM and A1 vehicles by holders of a category B learner authorisation. That concerns a person who already has the B practice authorisation; it does not make an AM licence a qualifying licence for the 17-year-old accompanied-driving application. Check the circular and current MIT instructions if that reverse situation is your question.
What to check before applying
Ask the local Motor Vehicle Office or driving school about updated forms and procedure. Do not rely on advice that treats all two-wheel licence categories as equivalent. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review road rules with category B quizzes and mistake review.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers theory quizzes and review of mistakes for study. It does not issue the accompanied-driving authorisation or replace the required course and supervision.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps review theory questions and mistakes; accompanied driving at 17 still requires the licence, authorisation and supervision specified by MIT.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use AM instead of A1 or B1 for accompanied driving at 17?
No. MIT guidance lists valid A1 or B1 as the prerequisite, so AM alone is insufficient.
Can I drive a B-category car alone once I am 17?
No. Accompanied driving requires an authorisation and an approved companion; it is not a category B licence.
