L6e and L7e: which documents distinguish light and heavy microcars?

L6e identifies a light quadricycle and L7e a non-light quadricycle; its approved category determines the licence check.

L6e is the European category for light quadricycles, while L7e identifies non-light quadricycles. For an AM or B1 licence, appearance is not enough: check the category and approval data for the individual vehicle.

L6e and L7e are not marketing names

The codes L6e and L7e identify approval classes, not perceived size or marketing trim. An L6e is a light quadricycle and may fall within AM when it meets the applicable requirements. An L7e is a non-light quadricycle: the MIT B1 page allows certain non-light quadricycles within its mass and power limits. Article 116 of the Highway Code also distinguishes vehicles in AM and B1. The precise licence depends on the approved technical data and version.

Look for the European category in the registration document and compare it with the vehicle label or certificate of conformity (CoC). Check mass, power, speed and seating using the definition given for each figure. Mass can refer to different conditions and battery treatment can vary for electric vehicles; do not compare a running-order figure with an unladen figure as if they were equivalent. An enclosed body and small dimensions do not turn an L7e into an L6e.

For example, two microcars from the same brand may look identical but have different codes because one is a more powerful version. If one is L6e and the other L7e, do not transfer the licence or technical data from one to the other. For an import or modified vehicle, make sure its registration category, CoC and VIN match before riding.

Match the vehicle category with the licence

Read the code in the Italian registration document, then check which licence covers that vehicle under the Highway Code and current MIT information. For an L7e, do not assume B1 automatically applies without checking the specific limits in the documents; for L6e, do not assume AM solely because the vehicle reaches 45 km/h. If classification or figures conflict, ask the Motorizzazione to verify using the approval number and VIN.

Frequently asked questions

Is every enclosed microcar an L6e that can be driven with AM?

No. It may be approved as L7e. Check the code in its documents and all applicable technical limits before choosing the licence.

Does L7e always mean B1 is enough?

L7e identifies a non-light quadricycle, but check the mass and power limits and the vehicle’s recorded category under the B1 rules.
