Maximum laden mass: where to find it on the registration certificate

On harmonised documents, field F.2 gives the maximum authorised mass. It is the reference for licence-category and load checks.

Field F.2 on the harmonised vehicle registration certificate gives the maximum authorised mass in the country of registration. It is used to check licence thresholds and load limits, but it is not the vehicle’s actual weight or unladen mass.

F.2 is not the vehicle’s unladen weight

On the harmonised registration certificate, field F.2 identifies the vehicle’s maximum authorised mass in the country of registration. This is an administrative and technical value used, among other things, to check whether a motor vehicle falls within category B or may require C1. Field F.1 may show the maximum technically permissible mass, which does not necessarily match the national value recorded in F.2.

Do not confuse F.2 with the unladen mass (item G) or with the weight measured at a weighbridge at a particular time. A campervan with an F.2 above 3,500 kg may require a different licence even when empty; a vehicle within the category B threshold must not, however, be loaded beyond F.2. To establish its actual weight, account for passengers, fuel, water, luggage and fitted accessories, as well as the limits for each axle.

For a vehicle and trailer combination, also check the trailer details, the maximum mass of the combination and the maximum towable mass. Specific fields such as O.1 or F.3 on harmonised documents describe other limits and do not replace F.2. Older or foreign registration certificates may arrange the fields differently: ask the relevant office to identify the equivalent figure.

A modification or conversion may have changed the authorised masses. Use the current document issued after the relevant procedure, not a sales brochure or an earlier copy. If the figures seem inconsistent, do not estimate: ask the Motorizzazione or the manufacturer for clarification before driving or loading the vehicle.

  • F.2: the vehicle’s maximum authorised mass in its country of registration.
  • F.1: the maximum technically permissible mass; it does not always match F.2.
  • G: the vehicle mass in running order, not its maximum mass.
  • For towing, also check the trailer fields and the limits for the combination.

Use the figure to choose the right licence

For a category B motor vehicle, the maximum authorised mass must not exceed 3,500 kg, subject to the other category requirements. If F.2 exceeds that threshold, check whether category C1 or C is required against the vehicle document. For a campervan or van, also check the number of seats and its approved classification, since special-purpose or passenger-carrying vehicles may follow different rules.

Field F.2 is also useful when planning a load: leave room for people and equipment, and have the axle load distribution checked if the vehicle is close to its limit. Do not overload it on the assumption that it can “take it” or because your licence category is correct.

Frequently asked questions

Does F.2 show how much my campervan weighs today?

No. It gives the maximum authorised mass, not its actual weight at that moment. You need to weigh it to establish its actual mass, while still observing the F.2 and axle limits.

For category B, should I check F.1 or F.2?

The category B threshold concerns maximum authorised mass; on harmonised documents the national reference is F.2. If the figures differ or you have a non-harmonised document, ask the Motorizzazione for clarification.
