Road rules
Can an operating machine use a main extra-urban road?
Generally no. Article 175 has a narrow exception for certain cranes; check the vehicle category and documents.
Operating machines are generally excluded from main extra-urban roads. The Code provides a limited exception for certain cranes; it does not automatically cover every piece of construction equipment.
The exception applies to a specific category
Article 175 excludes operating machines from motorways and main extra-urban roads, but includes a specific exception for cranes identified by the provision and their documents. It is not enough for a vehicle to have a crane fitted or to be heading to a worksite: its official classification and characteristics matter.
A platform lift, excavator or special vehicle does not become an eligible crane merely because it performs lifting work. Before planning a route, check the category on the registration certificate, whether the vehicle is officially identified as a crane, and the conditions for access. If the documents do not clearly support the exception, do not extend it by analogy.
Check road rules and any separate permit
The exception described here applies to main extra-urban roads; it is not a universal motorway permit. Signs and rules for a particular section may impose further conditions. An exceptional transport or special transfer may also require separate authorisation: the fact that a vehicle is a crane does not replace those steps.
For example, a crane that meets the precise provision may be allowed on a main extra-urban road if its documents identify it correctly and no further restriction applies. An excavator on the same road remains subject to the general exclusion. Frequently asked questions
Can any construction vehicle fitted with a crane use the road?
No. The exception is limited to cranes covered by Article 175. Check the official vehicle classification in its documents.
Does the exception also allow motorway access?
Do not extend it to motorways. The provision distinguishes the cases, and the crane exception described here concerns main extra-urban roads.
