Can you ride a 125 on a secondary extra-urban road?

Generally yes, unless a specific restriction applies. The motorway threshold is not a general ban on secondary roads.

A 125 motorcycle can generally use a secondary extra-urban road if the licence, vehicle and signs allow it. Article 175's threshold concerns motorways and main extra-urban roads; it does not create a general ban on secondary roads.

Distinguish the road classes

Article 2 distinguishes main extra-urban roads from secondary extra-urban roads. Article 175 sets conditions for motorways and main roads; it does not automatically extend the same threshold to every road outside a built-up area. A 125 is therefore not barred from a secondary road solely because it fails a condition for motorway access.

The motorcycle must still be compliant and covered by the correct licence. A 125 cc combustion motorcycle falls within A1 limits only if it also meets the maximum-power and other requirements. The rider must follow learner-permit or licence restrictions and any sign banning motorcycles on the route.

A ring road's name does not identify its class

Some sections called ring roads are main extra-urban roads; others have a different classification. Read the signs and, if an itinerary is unclear, check the road owner's official classification. Also look for motorcycle restrictions, temporary works and orders: a general rule does not override a specific restriction.

For example, a 125 may be allowed on a secondary road open to motorcycles but excluded from a ring-road section classified as a motorway or main extra-urban road if it fails Article 175 conditions. Frequently asked questions

Must I be 18 to use a secondary road?

The age condition applies to the Article 175 exception for motorways and main extra-urban roads. On a secondary road, follow the licence rules and other restrictions.

Is every ring road a main extra-urban road?

No. Its name does not determine the class. Check the signs, official classification and restrictions for the section.
