A2 test on an electric motorcycle: what must the vehicle meet?
For the practical A2 test on an electric motorcycle, check nominal power and the power-to-weight ratio in its documents.
For the practical A2 test on an electric motorcycle, the MIT requires a motorcycle without a sidecar, with nominal power from 20 to 35 kW, a maximum power-to-weight ratio of 0.2 kW/kg and an electric-vehicle minimum of 0.15 kW/kg. The 250 cm³ minimum applies to combustion engines.
Requirements for an electric test motorcycle
The Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT) sets the vehicle requirements for the practical A2 test. The motorcycle must have no sidecar and its nominal power must be at least 20 kW but no more than 35 kW. Its power-to-weight ratio must not exceed 0.2 kW/kg; for an electric motorcycle it must also be at least 0.15 kW/kg. This makes the electric requirement a range: meeting the shared upper limit is not enough if the ratio falls below the electric minimum.
The minimum engine capacity of 250 cm³ applies to a combustion motorcycle. It cannot be applied to an electric vehicle, which has no engine displacement; instead, check its power and the specified ratios. Do not confuse the test vehicle requirements with the limits for motorcycles you may ride after getting an A2 licence. Road use depends on the A2 category limits and the vehicle’s approval, while a motorcycle’s suitability for the test is a separate check. The MIT lists only a limited tolerance below the minimum combustion-engine capacity, not for electric ratios.
For example, an electric motorcycle without a sidecar with nominal power of 25 kW and a documented ratio of 0.17 kW/kg meets the published numerical limits. If the ratio is 0.12 kW/kg, it misses the electric minimum even though its power is between 20 and 35 kW. Use approved technical data, not a manufacturer’s advertised peak output.
Check the documents before booking
The MIT application process asks the candidate to state the motorcycle’s technical features and attach a copy of its registration document. Before booking the practical test, compare its nominal power and power-to-weight ratio with the technical documentation. If a value is unclear, ask the driving school or the Motorizzazione which manufacturer document it accepts; do not calculate the ratio using an arbitrary weight or a sales page.
Keep the test motorcycle separate from a motorcycle you plan to ride on the road. Passing the test does not certify other vehicles, and holding the licence does not make a non-compliant motorcycle suitable. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review motorcycle-category theory through chapters, exam quizzes and error review; the test motorcycle must be checked against its own documents and the licensing office’s instructions.

Frequently asked questions
Does an electric A2 test motorcycle need a 250 cm³ engine?
No. The 250 cm³ minimum is for combustion engines. For electric motorcycles, check nominal power from 20 to 35 kW and a power-to-weight ratio from 0.15 to 0.2 kW/kg.
Is every 35 kW motorcycle suitable for the practical A2 test?
No. It must also have no sidecar and meet the power-to-weight limits: at least 0.15 and no more than 0.2 kW/kg for electric motorcycles. Its documents must support the check.
