Road rules
Can a 6 kW electric motorcycle enter a motorway?
The threshold includes exactly 6 kW. The rider must also be an adult, hold the right licence and obey route restrictions.
Yes, the Article 175 threshold is “not less than 6 kW”, so exactly 6 kW meets the technical condition. The rider must be an adult, hold a valid licence for the motorcycle and observe section-specific bans.
Exactly 6 kW meets the threshold
Law 177/2024 added an exception for electric motorcycles with power of not less than 6 kW. “Not less than” includes 6 kW exactly; it does not mean more than 6. The change has been in force since 14 December 2024 and concerns access to motorways and main extra-urban roads under Article 175.
Do not confuse the electric-power threshold with the engine-capacity threshold for combustion motorcycles. They are alternative criteria for different powertrains: at least 120 cc for combustion, at least 6 kW for electric motorcycles. Check the vehicle's official registration data and approved power figure rather than a marketing description or peak output quoted without context. The adult-rider condition applies in either case.
Check the licence and the exact road
Meeting the 6 kW threshold does not establish which licence category you need. Article 116 and the vehicle's approved characteristics determine whether your licence covers it. Confirm the motorcycle is correctly registered, roadworthy and not subject to a restriction. Then identify the road: “ring road” does not tell you whether a section is a motorway or main extra-urban road.
For example, an adult riding a registered 6 kW electric motorcycle may meet the technical condition, while a 17-year-old on the same vehicle does not meet the age condition. A sign or local ban can also restrict access. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review road rules with category B quizzes and mistake review.

Frequently asked questions
Does exactly 6 kW qualify, or must it be higher?
Exactly 6 kW qualifies because the law says not less than 6 kW. The rider must also be an adult and licensed for that vehicle.
Does a 6 kW motor automatically mean an A1 licence is enough?
No. Access to a road and the licence required to ride the motorcycle are separate questions. Check the approved vehicle specifications and your licence category.
