Electric motorcycle: which power figure counts for the licence?
Use the motorcycle’s approved power in its documents, together with its category and the other applicable limits.
To choose the licence for an electric motorcycle, use its approved technical data, not an advertised peak-power figure. Category A1 depends on power and the power-to-weight ratio; the vehicle’s official documents identify the relevant values for that model.
Nominal, continuous and peak power
An electric motorcycle may be described using several figures: nominal power, maximum continuous power and short-term peak output. They are not interchangeable. For licensing, use the value specified for the category and recorded in the vehicle’s approval documents. A sales page highlighting peak output does not prove that the motorcycle falls within A1 or another category’s limits.
For A1 motorcycles, the Highway Code sets displacement, power and power-to-weight limits; definitions for electric vehicles refer to maximum continuous rated power. Engine displacement does not apply to an electric motor. Do not replace the registered figure with a calculation based on battery voltage, current, charging power or peak output. If the registration document does not make clear which figure is legally relevant, request the certificate of conformity (CoC) and ask the Motorizzazione to clarify.
For example, an advert may list a 15 kW peak while the approval documents show a different continuous rated power. Do not choose the licence using the first figure alone: compare the value required by the category, the power-to-weight ratio and the vehicle’s approved class. For an imported or modified motorcycle, the recorded data must match its actual configuration.
A method for checking one vehicle
Read the category and power in the registration document and compare them with the certificate of conformity linked to the vehicle identification number. Then apply every licence condition: being below a power ceiling is not enough if the power-to-weight ratio exceeds its limit or the vehicle belongs to a different category. If the certificate and registration document disagree, do not choose the more favourable figure; request an official correction or clarification before riding.
An Italian category B licence can cover certain A1 vehicles within legal limits, but it does not turn an electric motorcycle into another vehicle category. Frequently asked questions
Does the advertised peak power count for the licence?
Do not rely on commercial peak output. Check the value required for the category in the approval document and certificate of conformity for the vehicle.
An electric motorcycle has no displacement; is its kW figure enough?
No. Depending on the category, the power-to-weight ratio and vehicle classification also matter. Compare all recorded data with the required licence.
