Motorcycle with a sidecar: which licence category do you need?

A sidecar does not create a separate licence category: check L4e approval and apply the A1, A2 or A motorcycle limits.

A motorcycle with a sidecar is an L4e motorcycle: you need A1, A2 or A depending on its technical data. A1 requires all three conditions together: displacement up to 125 cc, power up to 11 kW and a power-to-weight ratio up to 0.1 kW/kg. A2 has different limits. The vehicle approval, not the sidecar’s presence, determines the category.

A sidecar remains in the motorcycle family

European category L4e identifies a motorcycle with a lateral sidecar. Article 116 of the Italian Highway Code expressly includes motorcycles with or without a sidecar in category A. There is no separate “sidecar licence”: you need the appropriate motorcycle category for the vehicle’s engine displacement, power and power-to-weight ratio. Its registration document may show specific data and configurations; do not infer the category just by looking at the attached sidecar.

For A1, the motorcycle, with or without a sidecar, must meet all three limits at once: displacement no greater than 125 cc, power no greater than 11 kW, and a power-to-weight ratio no greater than 0.1 kW/kg. Exceeding any one limit means A1 is not enough. For example, a 125 cc motorcycle producing 11 kW can still exceed A1 if its recorded ratio is 0.11 kW/kg. A2 covers motorcycles up to 35 kW and a ratio up to 0.2 kW/kg, provided the motorcycle is not derived from a version producing more than twice its power. A covers motorcycles without those power limits, subject to its access requirements. These limits apply to the motorcycle approved in its sidecar configuration.

Power-to-weight ratio is expressed in kW/kg; it is not engine displacement or the weight of the sidecar alone. Check the power and mass data used for the ratio in the vehicle documents or certificate of conformity. An unauthorised accessory can make a previously compliant configuration non-compliant. If the sidecar was fitted later or the vehicle documents do not clearly show the configuration, ask the Motorizzazione how to regularise it before riding.

A quick way to check

Read the type-approval category—often L4e for the motorcycle and sidecar—then compare the recorded values with your licence: for A1, all three limits; for A2, both the power and ratio limits and the rule on a restricted version; for A, the vehicle category and the relevant age or access condition. If you hold only B, do not assume that it is an A licence: Italian B extensions cover A1 vehicles and certain tricycles, not every L4e motorcycle.

Example: an L4e motorcycle with 400 cc and 25 kW is outside A1. It may qualify for A2 only if its ratio is at most 0.2 kW/kg and the motorcycle is not derived from a version exceeding 50 kW; otherwise A is required. To confirm whether your sidecar setup is permitted, compare the exact vehicle papers with the codes on your licence; the app cannot certify technical configurations or practical riding ability.

Frequently asked questions

Can I ride a 125 cc sidecar motorcycle with A1?

Only if it meets all three conditions together: no more than 125 cc, no more than 11 kW and a power-to-weight ratio no greater than 0.1 kW/kg. Displacement alone is not enough.

Is a B licence enough for a motorcycle with a sidecar?

Not automatically. In Italy, B has limited extensions for A1 vehicles and tricycles; an L4e is a motorcycle with a sidecar and must be checked against the required A1, A2 or A category.
