Sidecar motorcycle: which threshold applies for motorway access?
Article 175 bars combustion sidecars below 250 cc; at 250 cc, check licence and other requirements.
For a combustion sidecar outfit, Article 175(2)(a) prohibits access below 250 cc. A sidecar outfit of at least 250 cc falls outside that specific ban, but still needs the right licence and must meet other requirements.
A sidecar outfit and a motorcycle are distinct categories
For this Article 175 restriction, paragraph 2(a) excludes combustion sidecar outfits below 250 cc: exactly 250 cc reaches the threshold and is not barred by that clause. Paragraph 2-bis states the 120 cc or 6 kW exception for motorcycles; do not substitute it for the separate sidecar rule.
Check that the registration certificate identifies an approved sidecar outfit and read its combustion engine capacity. A conversion or added sidecar must be officially approved; appearance is not enough. Check which licence category covers that vehicle under Article 116, including any codes. The 250 cc threshold only resolves the exclusion in paragraph 2(a), not other vehicle or road requirements.
Keep the access threshold separate from the licence
A road-access condition does not decide by itself which licence is needed to ride the vehicle. Check the correct entitlement first, then apply the category-specific conditions in Article 175, and finally check signs and route restrictions.
For example, an approved combustion sidecar outfit recorded at 250 cc is not excluded under paragraph 2(a) on engine capacity; one at 249 cc is. In either case, check the licence, approval, tyres, load and signs: reaching 250 cc does not cancel other Article 175 restrictions.
