Boating licence
Can you operate a motorboat without a licence at 16?
Yes, within six miles and only within the age, power and engine-capacity limits; check the motor's official data.
Yes. At 16, you may operate certain small motorboats without a licence only within six miles of the coast, with power no greater than 30 kW and engine capacity within the limit for that motor type. Power is not the only check.
Age, distance and engine limits must all be met
MIT lists 16 as the minimum age for operating a small motorboat without a licence when no licence is otherwise required. The trip must remain within six nautical miles of the coast. The engine-power limit is 30 kW, about 40.8 CV, and separate engine-capacity limits apply according to cycle and installation.
The updated text lists six engine types: 750 cm³ for a carburetted two-stroke; 900 cm³ for a direct-injection two-stroke; 1,000 cm³ for a four-stroke outboard; 1,300 cm³ for a four-stroke inboard; 2,000 cm³ for a naturally aspirated diesel; and 1,300 cm³ for a turbocharged diesel. Exceeding any applicable threshold can require a licence even if the other figure is lower. To operate without one, age, distance, power and the applicable displacement threshold must all be respected.
Read the engine and boat's official data
Check the manufacturer's declared maximum operating power, engine capacity and engine type, rather than an advertisement or an estimated horsepower conversion. Confirm that the craft is legally a small motorboat and that its design category, CE marking and safety equipment allow the planned area. The age rule does not extend the boat's own navigation limits.
For example, a 20 kW, 800 cc carburetted two-stroke exceeds the 750 cc limit and requires a licence. A motor below 30 kW is not automatically exempt if its displacement exceeds the threshold for that type. Frequently asked questions
Are 16 years enough to operate any small motorboat without a licence?
No. You must also stay within six miles, remain within the 30 kW power limit and meet the engine-capacity threshold for that motor.
Does a motor rated at exactly 30 kW require a licence?
The MIT threshold is power greater than 30 kW, but check displacement separately: it can require a licence even below 30 kW.
