Can I go beyond six miles without a licence if my boat has a small engine?

No: beyond six miles from the coast, a nautical licence is required regardless of engine power or type.

No. A nautical licence is mandatory for navigation more than six miles from the coast, regardless of motorisation. Power and displacement thresholds apply to certain cases within six miles and on inland waters; they do not exempt a craft once it passes the distance limit.

Distance overrides engine power

The MIT lists all craft navigating beyond six miles from the coast among cases where a nautical licence is mandatory, regardless of engine power. A small, electric or low-displacement motor does not let a craft go farther without a licence. The 30 kW and engine-displacement thresholds are used for navigation on inland waters and within six miles.

Before calculating distance, identify the starting point, coastline reference and planned route; the distance is not measured only from the departure port to the first buoy. The licence must also cover the navigation range and vessel type, such as within 12 miles or without a distance limit. A licence limited to six miles does not permit navigation beyond that range. Special D1 is limited to within six miles and does not create an exemption farther offshore.

For example, a small 5 kW electric craft may be below the power threshold for some trips within six miles, but once the route goes beyond six miles a nautical licence is required. An ordinary licence within 12 miles can cover navigation up to that limit; beyond 12 miles, the appropriate no-limit licence is needed. A small engine does not change these distance rules.

Plan the route and confirm the licence

Estimate the maximum distance from the coast along the full route, not just from the harbour to a marker. Check the range shown on your licence, vessel documents and weather conditions. If you plan to exceed the licence limit, obtain the appropriate title first; do not rely on low engine power.

Frequently asked questions

Does a small electric engine let me go beyond six miles without a licence?

No. Beyond six miles, a licence is required regardless of engine type or power.

Does a 12-mile licence allow me to go farther than 12 miles?

No. Beyond the limit printed on the licence, you need the appropriate no-limit qualification and must meet the vessel requirements.
