Licence categories
Can you ride a 150cc scooter with an Italian category B licence?
In Italy, category B covers the A1 limits; a 150cc combustion motorcycle exceeds the displacement limit.
Generally, no. You cannot rely on Italy’s category B to A1 equivalence to ride a 150cc combustion motorcycle. A1 covers motorcycles up to 125 cm³, 11 kW and 0.1 kW/kg. A 150cc engine exceeds the displacement limit even if its power is low; you need a licence category that covers the vehicle.
The limit that rules out a 150cc combustion scooter
In Italy, category B holders may ride motorcycles within the national A1 equivalence. For a combustion engine, Article 116 sets three cumulative limits: no more than 125 cm³, maximum power of 11 kW and a power-to-weight ratio of no more than 0.1 kW/kg. Meeting only one or two of them is not enough.
A 150cc combustion motorcycle therefore exceeds the displacement ceiling. Having less than 11 kW does not make it rideable on category B. The everyday use of “scooter” for very different vehicles does not change the model’s approved category either.
Check the specific vehicle
Read the registration certificate to identify the vehicle’s approved category and technical data. Displacement, power in kW and the power-to-weight ratio are different measurements. An electric vehicle has no combustion-engine displacement, so its case must be assessed using its approved category and official power data; do not mechanically apply the 150cc rule to an electric scooter.
If you hold A1, A2 or A, check which category covers that model. If you hold only B, do not ride a 150cc combustion scooter unless your licence actually authorises it. A dealer’s listing, insurance policy or rental availability does not change the legal limits.
Example and study
Two scooters may both be rated at 11 kW. A 125cc combustion model may fall within A1 if it also meets the power-to-weight limit; a 150cc combustion model remains outside because of its displacement. Compare every required figure and the vehicle’s registered category instead of judging by power alone.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale lets you study licence categories, take theory quizzes and review incorrect answers. It can help you remember the rule, but it does not replace the registration certificate or an official check for an unusual approval case.

Frequently asked questions
Can I ride a 150cc combustion scooter with B if it has less than 11 kW?
No, not under Italy’s A1 equivalence: the maximum 125cc displacement is a separate requirement.
Is the same rule used for an electric scooter?
An electric scooter has no combustion-engine displacement. Check its approved class, official power and power-to-weight ratio; do not treat it as a 150cc combustion model.
