Category B and electric cars: how to read mass and power

To check whether an electric car can be driven on category B, check its category and maximum authorised mass; power alone is not enough.

Category B covers vehicles up to 3,500 kg maximum authorised mass. For certain alternative-fuel vehicles without a trailer, the limit may reach 4,250 kg if the extra mass comes from the propulsion system and the driver has held B for at least two years.

The details that determine the category

Electric propulsion alone does not change the licence required. For an ordinary M1 car, the main category B parameter is maximum authorised mass, which must not exceed 3,500 kg, alongside the permitted passenger capacity. Electric motor power is not a general standalone limit for category B cars: do not compare an electric car’s kilowatts with those of an A1 or A2 motorcycle.

The vehicle document lists its approval category and masses, including maximum authorised mass (field F.2 on harmonised European documents). Unladen mass and the vehicle’s actual weight on a given day are different figures. An empty vehicle may still have a maximum authorised mass above the category B threshold; conversely, its actual load does not change its administrative category, although it must stay within the vehicle’s technical limits.

A specific European provision allows drivers who have held B for at least two years, under certain conditions, to drive some alternative-fuel goods vehicles above 3,500 kg and up to 4,250 kg, if the extra mass comes from the propulsion system and does not increase payload. Do not automatically extend this exception to every electric car or motor caravan: check the current text, vehicle category and technical documents before driving.

This exception does not apply to every electric car or van: the mass above 3,500 kg must be due solely to the extra weight of the propulsion system and must not increase payload. Towing a trailer is not permitted in this configuration. Check the vehicle category and field F.2 on the registration document.

  • Identify the vehicle’s approved category.
  • Check maximum authorised mass in the documents, not only unladen weight.
  • The electric car’s kilowatts do not replace checking its category and mass.
  • Exceptions for some alternative-fuel vehicles have specific conditions and do not automatically apply to every electric vehicle.

A practical check before driving

Take the registration document for the specific vehicle and note its category and F.2. If it is a van, special-purpose vehicle or converted motor caravan, also check how it was registered: the commercial name does not determine its category. For an imported vehicle or documents in a different format, ask the relevant office or manufacturer to interpret the details.

If the mass limit is exceeded, do not rely on the car being nearly empty or looking like a lighter version. You may need a different licence category, and towing rules remain a separate check.

To revise licence categories,Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers chapter-based study, timed practice tests and review of incorrect answers.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive a 4,000 kg electric vehicle on category B?

Only if it qualifies for the alternative-fuel exception: the mass above 3,500 kg must come from the propulsion system, payload must not increase, the vehicle must not tow a trailer, and you must have held B for at least two years.

Which mass should I read on the registration document?

On harmonised European documents, maximum authorised mass is shown in field F.2. If the document differs or the figure is unclear, ask the Motorizzazione to confirm.
