Imported car: how do I know whether an Italian category B licence is enough?

Check the vehicle’s Italian registration data, approved seats and maximum authorised mass; the country of purchase does not decide the licence.

The country where a car was bought does not decide which Italian licence is required. Check the vehicle’s approved category, maximum authorised mass and passenger capacity as recorded in its valid registration documents. If it has been imported but not fully registered or its data are unclear, resolve the classification before driving.

The approved category controls

In Italy, category B generally covers motor vehicles with a maximum authorised mass up to 3,500 kg, designed for no more than eight passengers besides the driver. These limits apply to the approved vehicle, not to its brand, appearance or place of purchase. A car described abroad as a van, camper or passenger model may have a different classification in the Italian documents.

For an imported vehicle, use its Italian registration certificate when available and check the recorded category, mass and number of seats. Do not rely solely on a foreign advert, invoice or translated vehicle name. If the vehicle has not yet been registered in Italy, ask the Motor Vehicle Office or an authorised registration specialist which official data govern the case.

Check documents and any conversion

Compare the vehicle data with the categories on your licence, including any restrictions or codes. If the vehicle was modified, converted or fitted with extra seats, verify that the changes were approved and recorded. The actual weight on a particular trip does not replace maximum authorised mass, and seats removed informally do not change the approved passenger capacity.

For example, an imported passenger car registered in Italy at 3,200 kg and with no more than eight passenger seats may fit B if its classification confirms that result. A vehicle recorded above 3,500 kg does not become a B vehicle because it is empty. Ask for a formal clarification when the document has missing or inconsistent entries.

Separate the licence from other requirements

A suitable driving licence does not by itself complete import registration, insurance, inspection or approval requirements. Those are separate checks. Make sure the vehicle is legally registered and roadworthy before driving it on public roads.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers theory quizzes and mistake review to help study licence categories. It cannot verify an imported vehicle’s homologation or replace its official registration documents.
