Licence categories
Older category B licence: which motorcycles can you ride in Italy?
The issue date and any endorsements matter for an older Italian B licence; check the document and the applicable equivalences.
Knowing that a category B licence is “old” is not enough to tell which motorcycles you may ride in Italy. You need its issue date, the categories and codes actually recorded, and the rule that applies to that licence. Check both sides of the document and the vehicle’s approval data; if the equivalence is unclear, ask the Motor Vehicle Office before riding.
Why the issue date may change the answer
Licences issued in different periods may carry different categories, endorsements or acquired rights. Today, Italy’s category B permission also covers some motorcycles within the A1 limits, but that alone does not establish the rights associated with an older individual document. The issue date and the licence’s own entries must be considered together with the applicable conversion rules.
For a combustion A1 motorcycle, the limits apply together: displacement up to 125 cm³, power up to 11 kW and a power-to-weight ratio no higher than 0.1 kW/kg. A vehicle exceeding any one of these does not fall within A1 just because the licence is decades old. Electric motorcycles and tricycles require different checks based on their classification and power.
Checks on the licence
Check the issue date, categories on the front and back, any harmonised or national codes and the licence’s validity. Compare these details with the vehicle’s approved category and limits. Do not rely on a story such as “people with licences from that year could ride every 125”: a rule remembered informally may not describe your document or the vehicle you plan to use.
If the licence was replaced, renewed or exchanged from a foreign licence, check the entries on the current document as well. The Motor Vehicle Office can clarify which categories are recorded when the entitlement is not clear. Do not ride a vehicle outside your confirmed entitlement while waiting for an answer.
An example and theory study
Two people holding category B may have different issue dates and endorsements. One could have a specific entitlement recorded on the document; the other may rely only on the current national equivalence, within the vehicle limits. The relevant evidence is the actual licence, not the driver’s age.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers theory quizzes and mistake review to help reinforce category rules. Individual historic entitlements, however, must be checked on the licence and confirmed by the competent office.

Frequently asked questions
Does an older B licence always allow more powerful motorcycles?
No. You cannot infer that from the licence’s age; check the issue date and entries, as well as the vehicle’s approval.
Where can I check an unclear historic entitlement?
Contact the Motor Vehicle Office with the licence and vehicle details. Until it confirms the entitlement, do not assume the licence is valid for that vehicle.
